| What Type of Survey
Do I Need?
No matter what type of survey is called for, an experienced surveyor’s
eyes, ears and hands are your best tool in determining what condition
and value applies to your vessel.
CONDITION
& VALUATION (C&V) SURVEY
This is the most comprehensive type of survey and is strongly advised
when purchasing a used or even a new vessel. The independent surveyor
will examine the condition and overall operation of the vessel, including
electrical systems, propulsion equipment, the fuel system, miscellaneous
other on-board systems and electronics, and cosmetic appearance. Thomas
Nunn Surveys includes an out-of-water inspection and a sea trial and,
in the case of sailboats, a safe inspection aloft.
PRE-SALE SURVEY
Often a seller loses a sale when the buyer’s surveyor finds issues
of which the owner was unaware. A pre-sale survey can allow the seller
to correct these issues, which may be minor but numerous or few but more
significant. This type of survey generally does not include a sea-trial
but may include an out-of-water inspection.
INSURANCE SURVEY
This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine
whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. Typically, the company
is interested in structural integrity and safety for the vessel’s
intended use. Most insurance companies require a periodic survey on older
boats; they also want to know the vessel’s fair market value.
APPRAISAL
INSPECTION
This inspection is performed to gather enough information to determine
the fair market value of the vessel. This is normally needed for financing,
estate settlements, donations and legal cases.
